LETTUCE- HEADING
Lettuce is by far the most popular of the leaf salad vegetables, and belongs to the same broad family as chicory and endive. It has a long history in the kitchen with images on ancient Egyptian tombstones dating from 4500 BC. The Romans ate a lot of lettuce and by the 1st century AD, nine varieties were described including one with red leaves. The choice of lettuce from Franchi Sementi is amazing with “butterhead”, “crisphead”, “long leaved” (lettuga romana), “loose leaved” and cutting varieties (lettuga da taglio). Colour ranges from dark to light green, often with red fringes, to red.
